Sustainability – A core value that underlies all aspects of Intermed’s business
Research from leading business institutions is making it clear that companies are at last overwhelmingly committing to a program of corporate social responsibility and to having SDG goals – see the box below.
For Intermed, sustainability is a core value that has driven our product design philosophy for more than 20 years and has led to many innovations along the way. We have been guided by four principles that align with the four recognised pillars of sustainability:
Reuse: Powerful ‘Touch + Play’ communication for lasting effectiveness
By creating promotional products that are effective as a medium of communication and have a long and useful life, we reduce waste in the process.
‘Touch + Play’ encourages users to engage with your marketing message again and again, increasing its effectiveness and recall. Unlike the fleeting effect of a digital message, the visibility, functionality and longevity of our products makes sure of marketing effectiveness over the long term, reducing the need for multiple campaigns to achieve the same result.
Recycle: our longstanding baseline
We are proud to say that we have been using recycled plastic in our products for more than 20 years, significantly reducing our use of new plastic in that time.
Until recently we were limited to using only black recycled plastic in our products, but we didn’t rest in our search for a solution to this limitation. In 2022 we were able to source white recycled plastic for our range, further minimizing our use of new plastics.
Reduce: Cutting plastics with a new ‘plastic free’ packaging option
We have constantly sought to reduce our use of plastics in all aspects of our business and our goal for 2023 was to provide a non-plastic packaging option for our flagship Magic Cube clients. Already ahead of our own deadline, we can now offer clients a plastic-free packaging option.
Rethink: Always questioning the status quo in a quest for 100% sustainability
While some businesses have only now started looking at ways to use recycled plastic in their promotional products, we have been looking for the next innovation in sustainability – and we have found it.
In early 2023 we launched the Magic BioCube, a revolutionary product made from PHA, a bio-based and biodegradable non-plastic material. Using PHA reduces our reliance on plastics – new or recycled – and significantly contributes to a greener future. While PHA is still cutting edge, we look forward to a time when PHA is the standard in all our products.
Who knows what the next innovation will be but we are always seeking ways to rethink the status quo, the accepted normal, in a quest to reduce our business’s impact on this planet.
“Sustainable and planet-friendly products used to be a niche market. Today, that’s no longer the case. This research backs up what we’ve seen anecdotally over the years—demand is there.” – Sheila Bonini, senior vice president of private sector engagement at WWF in the United States.

The CSR impact on corporate purchasing decisions
